Back from GDC 2008
It feels a little weird being bac; I was just in San Francisco yesterday and I took the red-eye back to Pittsburgh. It feels like it’s 9:00 AM, but it’s actually 2:30 PM.
There were a lot of things I thought about while I was there, including the project, jobs, and what people had to say about the game industry. This year I had the strange feeling that I didn’t belong anywhere, because the conference is organized into little boxes based on business plans/industries (independent, casual, virtual worlds, console/pc, etc. etc.).
Aren’t we all just making games in the end? It’s it all about creating entertainment/art for the players regardless of what they pay, or what platform, or what software is used? Why do these industries have to be so exclusive?
At least I was able to grab pieces for here and there and made my own plate, but I’m sure that most of them out there had the mentality of “I make hardcore games, so I will only attend the hardcore lectures.” How can you expand your mind when you’re always thinking inside the box?
