People Don’t Understand Software Yet.
When it comes to something as crucial as e-mail, people won’t choose to switch from their Hotmail account to Gmail. They don’t really understand what they’re missing out.
I think it’s been roughly 10 years since the Personal Computer became something that is truly used by everyone, but consumers are still acustomed to the physical world. They can judge a product by its physical quality, since this system has been around for at least 100 years, but when it comes to judging software, we still go back to the ignorance that probably existed 100 years ago towards physical products. They figure that if the software does the job, then they’ll use it.
Take the Motorola Razr for example. It’s been one of the most popular mobile phones ever, and yet the software, the thing that you have to deal with to get anything done, is a piece of vomit converted to computer code. The phone looks nice, though.
However, you can show someone two cars: A Toyota and a Chevy, and if they had the funds to buy either of them they would choose the Toyota because they understand why it’s better, even if the Chevy is more affordable.
Times are changing, everything is going digital. People will become educated. I wonder how long it will take.
